Frozen alligators in north carolina

Innovative survival methods kick in for alligators in a freezing North Carolina swamp as they survive a cold snap by freezing themselves in place with their noses above the ice. Officials at The Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach took to Facebook this week with a video that shows the gators icebound in the swamp with only their snouts protruding and a toothy grin sealed in place.

The gators use the tactic to survive when the water around them reaches freezing temperatures in the frigid winter months. Animals that hibernate fall into a deep slumber and do not eat or drink for months. In brumation, reptiles still have periods where they are active and they do not fall into a deep sleep.

While they do not eat during this time, they do drink to avoid becoming dehydrated, according to the South Carolina Aquarium. They stay suspended [while frozen. When the gators froze at The Swamp Park last year — the first time officials at the park saw this occur — they remained frozen for a few days before thawing, The Charlottesville Observer reported at the time.

T hose visiting frozen swamps in North Carolina a few days ago would have seen a very strange sight - alligator snouts poking out of the icy ponds, with their bodies frozen below. Although the creatures were as still as if they were dead, experts have assured the public that this is simply how alligators survive in unexpectedly cold weather.

A "bomb cyclone" hit the East Coast of the US last week, dumping snow as far south as Florida, and causing usually relatively warm and humid swamps to face icy temperatures.

The park described the conditions as a "freeze like no other" and said it allowed them to show their followers how adaptable the alligators were to the unusually cold climate. W hile, when the weather permits it, alligators can usually be seen sunning themselves, basking in light filtering through the trees and the sun beating on their backs, the animals can survive in water as cold as 4 degrees celcius, and go into a hibernation-like state in order to keep their bodies warm and conserve energy.

T he animals, while poking their nostrils upwards, keep their stationary bodies suspended in the water. W hen it gets particularly cold, alligators burrow deep in mud holes in the banks of the water for extra warmth.

However, they can't survive like this indefinitely, with park officials noting the alligators would probably become extremely ill or perish if the weather went on for more than a week. Luckily for the animals, they thawed a few days after the pond froze over and the air and water temperature went above freezing. These spectacularly close up alligator pictures were taken by a wildlife photographer brave enough to jump in a lake swarming with the wild reptiles. Jim Abernethy, 52, from Florida even literally played snap with one of the beasts- which he nicknamed, Fluffy- by mimicking the way alligators square up to each other in the wild.

While totally submerged in a lake in the wild marshland of the Florida everglades Jim raised his arm above the water like an alligator would raise its jaws to provoke Fluffy into opening his mouth for the 'killer shot. Jim was also able to get heart stopping pictures of the amphibious hunters looming from the deep. Rosenblatt told The Washington Post. They slow down their heart rate, their digestive system, and they just sit there and wait out the cold weather. They survive by sticking their snouts out of the ice, which allows them to breathe while keeping the rest of their bodies extended into deeper and warmer water, Inverse explains.

However, Howard told HuffPost last year that the gators could not stay in that state indefinitely.

Great Gators and Crocs.Alligators at a North Carolina outdoor-recreation park displayed their incredible survival skills in viral video showing the reptiles in frozen waters.

The Swamp Park's general manager, George Howard, found the rescue gators in their enclosures Monday morning with their noses frozen above water after temperatures in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, fell below freezing. The Swamp Park is home to about 18 American alligators who have been rescued from places that tried to keep them in captivity illegally.

Living at the Swamp Park saves the gators from being euthanized because the domesticated reptiles can't be released back into the wild. Howard said that many people don't know alligators are "one of the only species on the planet that are virtually unchanged since dinosaurs. When the temperature began to dip, the gators stuck their noses above the water to prevent being completely submerged in their enclosure's frozen pond, Howard said.

Then their bodies went into brumation, the cold-blooded reptile's version of hibernation. IE 11 is not supported.
